CASE 08

The two-year rebuild

Reputation

Situation. A client whose attack was already over. The content had been dealt with. On paper, the problem was solved.

What was left. Nothing was findable, and everything was remembered. Investors who had read the material still carried it. Introductions went quiet for reasons nobody stated. Diligence conversations had an extra half-hour in them.

Removal fixes the record. It does not fix what people believe. An investor who read the article in March does not un-read it because it was de-indexed in June.

What most advisors would have done. Declare victory at removal and hand over an invoice. Technically the engagement succeeded. Commercially the client was still carrying most of the damage — and had no idea this was the normal outcome, because nobody had told him that removal and recovery are two different projects.

What we did. Committed to two years, and said so at the start rather than selling a quarter at a time.

Outcome. Over two years, what a person found when they looked into the client came to reflect his actual work. More importantly, so did what people said when nobody was searching.

The lesson. The internet has a shorter memory than people do. Repairing the record is the fast part, and the industry sells only that. Repairing what people believe takes years, needs something true to build on, and is the part that determines whether the client gets the next deal.

A rebuild only works if there is something real to build with. Part of our job is telling you when there is not — in which case the answer is not more content. It is doing something worth covering first.
